Scar Revision To Reduce & Minimize Scars

Scar Revision

Scar Revision

Scar revision can improve the appearance of scars caused by past injuries, wounds, burns, or trauma. The purpose of scar treatment is to minimize the appearance of existing scar tissue by repositioning the scar or altering skin texture to better blend in with your complexion. Scar reduction treatment can reduce prominent hypertrophic scars, as well as keloid scars, for long-lasting enhancements to your skin texture.

Hypertrophic scars are more common and usually form immediately following an injury. These scars may appear raised and are limited to the area of the initial injury. Keloid scars are far less common than hypertrophic scars and may grow to larger sizes. Keloids may take years to form and may spread in size to surrounding areas over time. Scar treatment can address both of these types of cosmetic concerns through a variety of methods. Scar revision surgery can be combined with laser scar reduction techniques to provide a comprehensive approach to minimizing notable scarring. Patients who are bothered by either facial scars or body scars can undergo scar revision to reduce the prominence of scar tissue.

Your Scar Revision Procedure

Scar revision can be performed in-office, at an outpatient surgical facility, or a local hospital, depending on the specific techniques utilized. When undergoing scar revision surgery, your scar revision surgeon may surgically reposition the existing scar tissue. This technique, also known as a Z-plasty, can make your scar less noticeable by giving it a Z-shaped pattern. In some cases, a W-plasty may be performed, which sculpts existing scar tissue in a W-shape to better camouflage your scar.

Laser scar treatments may also be used during your scar revision procedure. Laser technology delivers laser heat energy to your skin’s underlying layers, spurring on the production of new collagen to enhance skin structure and minimize scarring. Additionally, laser energy can resurface the initial layers of skin, which can improve the appearance of scar color and texture. The specific type of scar revision treatment that is right for you will depend on your individual procedure.

Scar revision can be combined with additional skin care treatments, laser-based techniques, or plastic surgery methods. Your plastic surgeon can discuss which procedures will best fit your needs during your consultation.

What To Expect After Undergoing Scar Revision

Scar revision patients are usually given bandages to be worn in subsequent weeks for optimal healing. Bruising, swelling, or redness is common following scar revision and may last anywhere from approximately 1-4 weeks. Patients undergoing laser-based scar treatments can expect minimal downtime and recovery. Your scar revision surgeon will discuss specific timelines and aftercare suggestions during your in-office consultation.

Scar treatment can achieve substantial, long-lasting improvements to the appearance of scars. Patients should begin to notice a reduction in the treated scars in the weeks following treatment.
